Back in October, my middle school had a “scare” in regards to a threat of a school shooting. I am working on a MUCH longer format comic about the topic but I finished this five page bit and I thought I’d put it up here.
Hey Tumblr people! I’m excited to let y’all know that I’ll be contributing comics and illustrations to a NEW addition to the Big Fat Notebook series for Workman Publishing this year! Previous to this, I drew the Math and Science BFNs… and I’m currently hard at work on another great addition to the line.
For folks who’ve never seen the books, they’re wonderfully appealing explanations of middle school curriculum with lots of jokes and clever bits that make understanding Common Core Standards a whole lot less daunting.
I’ll talk about the work more in the weeks ahead, but for now, just an excited heads up. I’m super pumped to doodle in another awesome BFN!
Hourly Comic Day is upon us! Here’s 9 AM to 4 PM with a bonus 3 AM comic because I… have the FLU.
I will try to ink 5 PM to bedtime tomorrow.
Hi. Hello. Gonna try to start posting more comics in 2018. Not a ton more… but more than none, which is some. Hello!
This was frustrating! I had to explain to this former student that my reasons for accepting a new job had nothing to do with the behavior of the students at her school and instead stemmed from a variety of other concerns.
I’ve rarely encountered “bad kids”. Bad situations, yes… but almost never bad kids.
For the last week, I’ve been posting comics under the title “Here’s Why.” Those comics were during a finals week at the high school where I had been working for two years. I drew them for myself mostly, and didn’t plan on posting them anywhere. They were mainly a kind of practice, trying to jumpstart my doodling for the summer.
While I love drawing comics about my job, teaching is a difficult topic about which to stay honest. I find good educators are some of the most positive people around, working hard to “accentuate the positive” and push frustrations away from the everyday grind. Being critical can often seen as being negative and as such, it’s something I try to avoid in large amounts when I do my little doodles. There’s so much good out there… why focus on the lousy?
Well, I had something lousy happen to me this summer that quite changed my trajectory as a teacher… and I had to draw some comics about it. I hope I was more positive than negative about it, while still being frank about how ill-used I was made to feel by my former school district. I’m fairly happy with this run of strips.
